All about...
Alicante,
The only people who ever have a bad word to say about Alicante are the very same people who have never been there. Situated on Spain’s eastern coast, bordering Murcia on the south and Valencia on the north, Alicante is, in reality, one of the country’s most attractive and cosmopolitan cities with an irresistible all-year-round buzz. Add that to rich cultural and culinary traditions, demonstrated by a wide selection of award-winning museums, world-class restaurants and deep-rooted festivities, and you might have to ask yourself why you haven’t been to see the true Alicante for yourself yet!

Best alfresco entertainment:
Parque El Palmeral
Escape from the crowds and head to Parque El Palmeral – a lush public park on the southern outskirts of Alicante. Picnic beneath gently swaying palm trees or navigate the lakes and waterfalls by boat, all the while serenaded by exotic birds and a cool sea breeze. A children’s theatre springs to life at the centre of the park every Sunday during the summer months, with the park staying lively until 11pm even in the winter.
Where: Parque El Palmeral, Bus 1 to San Gabriel from Juan XXIII 1st Sector, Alicante (opens 9am).

Best intimate dining:
Monastrell
Alicante has a rich gastronomic heritage as well as some of Spain’s most cutting edge restaurants. Get a taste of the old and the new at chef Maria José San Román’s petite fine dining establishment, Monastrell. The small space means no distraction from the fusion of traditional Mediterranean delicacies and daring, new-wave Catalan and Levante cuisine – or your chosen company.

Benacantil
Look down on the city from the imposing heights of this mini-mountain rising up behind Alicante’s old town (El Barrio). Spare a moment to look out for the Santa Barbara Castle and La Ereta Park, which are both crafted built on to its side.

Best day trip:
Jijona
Found in foothills of a mountainous region 25km north of Alicante, the town of Jijona (or Xixona in Valenciano) is a mouthwatering day trip 365 days a year for two reasons. In summer the town busies itself with ice cream production, while in winter it produces the finest variety of Spain’s devilishly sweet Christmas treat túrron. The town’s dedicated túrron museum, Poligono Industrial Ciudad del Turrón, is another very good reason to visit.
Where: Poligono Industrial Ciudad del Turrón, 10.2, Carretera Busot, km.1, Tel: +34 965 610 225.
Location
The airport is situated 7 miles south east of the region's capital
